The Lewa Children's Home, one of Bread and Water for Africa's most successful partners, was founded in the 1960s by Bread and Water for Africa UK's volunteer spokesperson, Phyllis Keino. There are 110 children, aged 0-20+, currently living in the Lewa Children's Home and another 76 local children being sponsored with school fees, food, and basic necessities. Children cared for by the home have been orphaned, abandoned or neglected by their parents and, were it not for the Children's Home, would have nowhere else to turn. Some children are eventually placed with relatives while others remain at the Home until they are able to enter society as adults. The home, aside from providing basic necessities such as food, clean water, clothing, shelter, and healthcare for these children, also provides those previously exposed to violence or other traumatizing events with counselling to help them become healthy both physically and emotionally.
The Lewa Children's Home is located on a 500-acre plot of land outside of the town of Eldoret. It is situated alongside the Baraka Farm which plays an integral part in the entire programme's self-sufficiency. Baraka Farm provides the fresh food, milk and cheese for the Home as well as the Kipkeino School - a primary school also founded by Phyllis Keino which is situated across the street from the Home and Farm. The Farm sells its surplus organic crops and dairy products at the farm shop or at supermarkets in town to help support the home. It employs over 100 people from the local community, providing much needed jobs for this impoverished area, and also provides demonstrations and information on sustainable development to local farmers.
