Kipkeino School

Programme Region: Kenya

Programme Activity: Education, Orphan Care

Though the Kenyan government began subsidising grammar schools nationwide a few years ago, primary schools remain private and require school fees from students' families.  This poses a huge problem to most of rural Kenyan families.  Furthermore, all schools at all levels require students to wear uniforms purchased by their families- a cost which often prevents children from being allowed to earn an education.

The Kipkeino primary school opened for classes in January 1999 and currently provides a Western style education to 288 students from around the country of Kenya. Scholarships and financial aid are extended to all school-age children from the Lewa Children's Home (its partner programme) and to a specified number of children unable to pay traditional school fees.

The School is currently planning to build a sickbay for its students.  After the completion of this sickbay, children who board at the school (as well as the little ones from the Lewa Children's Home across the street) will not have to travel the 10 km into town to receive medical attention for easily treatable illnesses.  This sickbay will employ two nurses and will have sleeping accommodations for 2 boys and 2 girls should students require overnight monitoring.

To learn all about how school administrator Paul Scott and wife Elizabeth began their work at the Kipkeino School, read this article from Kenya's Nation newspaper.
